I didn't wet the bed...

Updated: Apr 25, 2019

A delivery story 40 hours in the making

It was almost 40 hours between 1st contraction and welcome Baby Blank. Here is what happened in those 40 hours....

At 1 am Sunday August, 16th I felt what I would describe as really bad cramps. By now, Baby Blank was two days late, so I wasn't that surprised to be feeling this. I had just gone to bed and my husband was on the couch watching a movie. I calmly walked out, told him I thought he should try and get some sleep, because I was pretty sure I was having a contraction, and he might want some rest before the big show.

He looked at me like I was nuts, sat up like a deer in headlights, asked what I needed and promptly went to bed when I responded that I would need him functional and awake when this went down. I laid down on the couch with the dog, who seemed beyond confused.

Baby Blank was two days late...

The contractions intensified and got closer together throughout the night. I took a shower, had something to eat, slept a bit, the normal stuff?!?...

At 3pm 8-7-17 I decided we should head to the hospital, after I had checked in with my doctor. I had been having contractions for 13hrs at that point.

We called our parents, packed the car, walked the dog and off we went.

When we got to the hospital, we went to triage the nurse checked, let me know I was at 2cm and my Doctor would probably send me home.

Well- My doctor didn't. She told the nurse, that if I was in pain, they should admit me. She knew my pain tolerance. I had once fallen asleep getting a tattoo on my ribcage. I wasn't a stranger to dealing with pain.

So, upstairs to L+D we went. Got changed into a sexy robe, had a bunch of shit connected and then had a nurse call my doctor, because my contractions were showing very intense and fairly close together, but my body wasn't showing signs of progress....

At least I could get an epidural? Yay. It would fail 4hrs later, waking me up, but that would be a good thing. See, I woke up to realize my bed was wet. Now, seeing as I had a catheter- perks of an epidural, I knew it wasn't me.

What was it?!?

My pitocin had somehow disconnected from my IV and was leaking all down the bed. No clue how much, or how long, but clearly leaking onto the bed meant it had been doing jack shit for me. Progressing? Hard to do when the meds that are supposed to help with that are simply wetting the bed.

So now, we were looking at a 2nd epidural, my needing to somehow get up to have all bed sheets changed, and essentially starting all over because nothing had changed.

We would realize over time, the meds wouldn't have done what they needed either. I never got past 6cm. Seriously: 40 hours-2 Epidurals-1 Wet Bed-and they finally declared we were going the C-Section route.

Least I can still harass my kid about how long I was in labor for when she is older?
